In 2004, Nike introduced a car project for the Gran Turismo game. A car that foreshadowed the automotive world of 2022.
The Nike ONE 2022 concept aimed to be the essence of the brand’s creative expression with the Swoosh. The Nike ONE 2022 was originally developed in 2004 in collaboration with Polyphony Digital for Gran Turismo 4 as the first VGT. It paved the way for all other car manufacturer concepts that followed. Designer Phil Frank was working at Nike at the time, designing items ranging from sunglasses to watches to backpacks. A chance meeting in 2003 with Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital and initiator of the Gran Turismo franchise, during a visit to Nike sparked the idea for a Nike concept car.

Frank decided to imagine what a car would look like 20 years later. An electric car powered by the human body through the “Spark Suit.” This fictional garment was a portable generator, using nanotechnology to convert human body energy into electricity to power the car. And he didn’t hold back, deciding that the driver could provide up to 200 kW of electrical power to drive the four wheel motors!
The car made its one and only appearance in Gran Turismo 4, where you had to win the Saleen S7 one-make championship to unlock it. But Nike also set up a brilliant marketing plan with an overpriced limited edition of GT4 that, besides the game, included a pair of custom Nike sneakers and a t-shirt. By scanning the patterns of the latter using the PlayStation 2’s “EyeToy” camera, the Nike One 2022 would enter your garage. An electric car with a carbon shell and a sort of QR Code before its time, it was already tomorrow.
