Opel Rocks, the Citroën Ami with a blitz reserved for Germany

On the same duplication concept as the Fiat Topolino, Citroën has rebadged its Ami as the Opel Rocks in Germany.

Everyone at home and the sheep will be well managed. Speaking of sheep, this one is somewhat “mangy” with plastic that frankly does not flatter it with its gray doors and black front and rear parts. How, with such a close genealogy to the Citroën Ami and the very successful Fiat Topolino, could the marketing experts at Opel let pass such an unattractive product? Because for this, even the French version has much more charm.

The question is even greater since, apart from a few logos here and there, we are clearly looking at a Citroën Ami… but at a higher price. Starting at 8340 euros for the version with the lightning (blitz, in German) compared to 7990 euros for the one with the chevrons… and 9890 euros for the Fiat.

You need to move upmarket to discover a more attractive Opel Rocks, but again, at a higher cost. It should also be noted that Germany has ended, in 2024, all ecological bonuses for electric vehicles.

The Revolution of License-Free Vehicles

The Opel Rocks, just like the Citroën Ami and the Fiat Topolino, is designed to meet the specific needs of modern city dwellers. These three models share a similar technical platform, a strategic choice aimed at maximizing production cost efficiency and making these electric vehicles more affordable for a wide audience.

The Citroën Ami, launched in 2020, was the first to pave the way in this segment. It quickly established itself as an innovative mobility solution, particularly appreciated for its ultra-compact format, original design, and attractive pricing… compared to license-free cars that had been on the market until then. The Citroën Ami has managed to appeal to a young clientele, often without a traditional driver’s license, thanks to its ease of use and low speed, perfectly suited for urban trips.

Technical Characteristics

All these vehicles are equipped with a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a similar range of about 75 kilometers, ideal for daily city trips. Their maximum speed is limited to 45 km/h, making them accessible to a young audience from 15 years old with an AM (or BSR) license, or to those looking for a simple and secure means of transport.

The Rocks, the Topolino, and the Ami also share a philosophy of personalization. Each model allows users to choose from a range of colors and accessories to reflect their personal style. However, the Opel Rocks focuses on a more functional design, while the Citroën Ami plays the originality card with its colorful options, and the Fiat Topolino leans towards retro charm.
