Mercedes-AMG for a new all-electric SUV

For the first time in 57 years, Mercedes-AMG is developing a fully homegrown SUV.

It is the AMG.EA electric platform that will form the basis of this electric SUV. Although the AMG division was originally intended to create sports cars, the manufacturer has already made higher-riding vehicles. Nevertheless, the Affalterbach-based manufacturer has never worked independently on an SUV.

This will be the second model built on the AMG.EA electric platform. But also the sixth vehicle entirely developed by AMG, in addition to the first AMG.EA model currently in the testing phase, as well as the previous generation GT, SL, GT, and SLS models.

Surely, the existence of the BMW XМ has inspired AMG engineers to react. It’s legitimate to wonder if they are stepping a bit too far outside their comfort zone. For Michael Schiebe, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG, the manufacturer fully respects its philosophy.

“SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a high-performance off-road model based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ This means the vehicles are not just electric but also embody the core qualities of AMG: emotion and performance.”

When Mercedes-AMG announced this model, they took the opportunity to reveal its outline. Although the details are very difficult to decipher, one can imagine a sleek silhouette with a fairly long hood. Unfortunately, to see this beauty in action, patience will be required. It is not expected to be unveiled before 2026 or 2027.
