Hyundai to produce a self-driving electric vehicle for China

Hyundai to partner with Haomo to produce a semi-autonomous electric vehicle for Chinese customers

The South Korean giant has decided to collaborate with Haomo, a Chinese company developing autonomous driving technology. The goal is to produce a fully electric vehicle that will only be sold in China. It will also be equipped with artificial intelligence and is expected in the second half of 2025.

DriveGPT Technology

Artificial intelligence is a new feature for a Hyundai vehicle. It will be equipped with the «DriveGPT» technology, an autonomous driving system that uses AI similar to ChatGPT. DriveGPT is designed to identify and make decisions based on text, photos, and videos. This AI is rated as Level 2 to 2.5 on a scale of 0 to 5. This means the car will be capable of controlling basic functions. It will easily handle steering, acceleration, and braking but will require human supervision for more complex commands.

DriveGPT is built on a model that uses 120 billion parameters as well as data from 40 million different vehicles. This self-learning AI system will enable Hyundai’s new car to gather data and learn from it.

An Arrival in the Chinese Market

The Chinese market, the largest in the world, is dominated by BYD and Tesla. Despite the success of the Ioniq model in Europe and the United States, Hyundai still struggles to establish itself in the Middle Kingdom. The introduction of this midsize electric vehicle equipped with artificial intelligence aims to help Hyundai regain ground in the race to become the leading manufacturer in China.
