Why is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 entering the Guinness Book of Records?

From the Himalayas to the beaches of Kerala, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 set an impressive record, pushing the boundaries of electric mobility.

No need to beat around the bush or keep you waiting: initiated by the Hyundai subsidiary in India, a Ioniq 5 established a new altitude record for an electric car. This challenge, undertaken over more than 4,900 kilometers of a road trip across India, serves as a beautiful postcard to the country now on the South Korean manufacturer’s list of priorities.

The journey, organized by Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), began at Umling La, the highest accessible point in the world by car, perched at 5,799 meters above sea level in the Ladakh mountains. This remote and inhospitable region is famous for its icy temperatures and relentless terrain.

A journey between sky and sea

After conquering the Himalayan peaks, the team driving the Ioniq 5 descended to reach Kuttanad in Kerala, located three meters below sea level! This striking contrast of 5,802 meters in altitude over a 14-day route demonstrated the vehicle’s exceptional ability to face extreme climates and diverse environments.

During this expedition, this Hyundai faced icy Himalayan passes, steep and unstable mountain roads, as well as tropical humidity and southeastern Indian coastal marshes.

The model of Hyundai Ioniq 5 chosen for this occasion had a 72.6 kWh battery, and the small story does not reveal where and when the recharges were made, nor how this particular unit managed to leave Umling La. Probably thanks to trucking arrangements.

Hyundai, whose “non-Chinese” passport is an advantage in entering the Indian market, will now multiply promotional campaigns to boost its popularity. The return of record-breaking endeavors, like a century ago in Europe, is also quite charming.
