Fast charging arrives in motorsport

Formula E drivers will soon experience the delights of rapid charging. Will they be more patient than us?

Formula E is the first world championship for motorsport exclusively featuring fully electric single-seaters. In a way, it’s the F1 of new mobility — with less glamor, less noise, less speed, but also fewer emissions! The goal is to highlight sustainable technology and innovation in motorsport. For its 11th season, Formula E introduces the PIT BOOST, a new feature that promises to transform the racing experience.

The PIT BOOST is an innovation in race strategy, introduced during certain rounds of season 11. This system allows, mid-race, to provide about a 10% energy boost (3.85 kWh) to the cars through a super-fast recharge of 600 kW lasting 30 seconds in the pit lane. Using the PIT BOOST is mandatory, offering more than double the power of current consumer superchargers. This novelty adds an extra strategic dimension, with the potential for significant impact on results and race tactics.

The PIT BOOST is designed to rethink strategy in Formula E. Teams and drivers will have to weigh the benefit of an energy boost against the risk of losing positions on the track during the pit stop. The timing of activation will be crucial, increasing the intensity and spectacle of each race. The PIT BOOST will make its debut at the Jeddah E-Prix in Saudi Arabia, on February 14 and 15, 2025.
