Does a fully electric BMW M surprise you?

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept is only the starting point of the 3 Series revolution. Strap in!

First and foremost, think of the future BMW i3 as a key part of the logical evolution of the 3 Series. Similar to the 5 Series and 7 Series, the next generation of the 3 Series will be available in both internal combustion and electric versions. The i3 will represent the electric lineup, which will also include a high-performance all-electric M3. The 3 Series is BMW’s flagship, its essential compact, while the M3 is revered by enthusiasts. The i3 will mark BMW’s most ambitious attempt to appeal to electric vehicle buyers. Its bold design, inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse concept, paves the way for a new era for the Bavarian brand. Moreover, the electric M3 will be the first “real” electrified M, a crucial turning point.

The i3 and the electric M3 will be built on a new EV platform, introducing an 800-volt architecture and batteries with a 30% higher energy density than current technologies. As for the motors, although BMW remains discreet, the M division is working on configurations with four motors to differentiate its models from hybrids like the i4 M50. With rear motors generating up to 335 horsepower and AWD variants reaching 536 horsepower, the i3 should offer solid performance.

The 3 Series electric will compete with the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, while its M version will directly challenge the benchmark Model 3 Performance. However, the shift to electric might deter some traditional petrol engine enthusiasts, especially as a petrol-powered M3 will remain available. It will be fascinating to follow the parallel careers of these two versions to see whether electricity ultimately overtakes leaded fuel.
