BMW M2 CS: A Worthy Heir of the 3.0 CSL Batmobile?

The new BMW M2 CS has just made its official debut at Villa d’Este, and it is already making waves.

With its sharp lines, refined aerodynamics, and increased power, it could well embody the modern heir of a legend: the BMW 3.0 CSL, nicknamed the “Batmobile”.

Launched in the 70s, the BMW 3.0 CSL is a lightweight and radical version of the E9 coupe. Produced for competition homologation, it stands out with its wide wings, long hood, spectacular aerodynamic appendages, and especially its enormous rear wing, hence its nickname “Batmobile”. Its iconic silhouette and competition pedigree still excite BMW Motorsport enthusiasts today.

Worthy of the icon?

With the M2 CS, BMW revitalizes the spirit of this icon. More radical than the standard M2, this new version features exclusive elements: a “ducktail” spoiler molded into the carbon trunk lid, bronze wheels wrapped in ultra-high-performance tires, a redesigned grille without the traditional vertical bars, and an aggressive front bumper with large air intakes.

Under the hood, there is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder pushing around 525 hp, even surpassing the rear-wheel-drive M4 Competition. Lightweight due to extensive use of composite materials, the M2 CS promises an exceptional power-to-weight ratio, ensuring sharp sports handling.

Even though it may only offer an 8-speed automatic transmission, this limitation will soon be forgotten at the wheel of such an expressive machine, both raw and refined.

In summary, the BMW M2 CS is not just a more powerful version of the M2: it may well be the purest expression of the M DNA in a long time. And if the 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” marked history, the M2 CS looks ready to write a new chapter.
