Cautious Arrival in Europe for the Affordable Nio Firefly Electric Car

For its first steps outside of China, Nio has chosen a cautious yet skillful strategy by launching its small electric compact in friendly territory.

The first deliveries of the Nio Firefly EV will begin on August 15 in Norway and the Netherlands. Two markets where electric cars are already firmly established, and where the acceptance of a 100% Chinese city car seems the most natural.

Norway, in particular, represents an ideal gateway, a territory conquered by electric vehicles where more battery-powered cars are now purchased than those with combustion engines. Nio even discreetly registered six units of the Firefly EV in July, presumably for initial press tests or static demonstrations.

Nio has not forgotten anything

Under its compact and original silhouette of 4 meters long, with distinctive round headlights and a contrasting black roof, the Firefly conceals a well-thought-out specification for the city. Under the hood, there’s a 141 hp electric motor paired with a 42.1 kWh battery. This provides an announced range of 420 km in the Chinese CLTC cycle, so about 300 km in the WLTP cycle, and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds. The interior is equally impressive with a 13.2-inch central screen, 14 speakers, 9 airbags, and even a fragrance diffuser.

Sold for around 16,000 euros in China, the Firefly EV sees its price jump to 23,500 euros in Norway. A price gap of over 60% that is not surprising once the generous Chinese subsidies are removed and European taxes are applied instead.

After Norway and the Netherlands, other countries will follow: Austria, Belgium, Poland, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania… but not yet France according to the information provided by the manufacturer. A market surely too complicated to conquer for this ambitious Firefly, which aims above all to prove that small Chinese electric cars can also shine in Europe.
