Here is the Defender that will take on the Dakar!

Land Rover has chosen the Defender OCTA, the fastest and most powerful model in its range, to conquer the legendary Rally-Raid.

The Defender OCTA will take on the Dakar Rally and the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) starting in 2026. It will compete in the “Stock” category, reserved for production vehicles, according to new regulations aimed at enhancing competition among high-performance 4x4s and SUVs. This choice will highlight the durability and exceptional capabilities of the Defender OCTA, equipped with a 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 engine and a D7x aluminum monocoque architecture, three times stronger than traditional designs.

During the five rounds of the W2RC, two specially prepared vehicles will compete in this category. Three Defenders will also be lined up for the Dakar, the most demanding off-road event. These models will retain the original transmission, powertrain, and structure, underscoring their robustness and ability to face extreme conditions.

A legend to defend!

“The Dakar represents the ultimate test for our most extreme Defender,” says Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Defender. “We are confident that the Defender OCTA will be a true contender in rally-raids, combining performance and durability.” James Barclay, Director of JLR Motorsport, adds: “Working with ASO and the FIA to redefine the ‘Stock’ category is a turning point. We have a year of intense preparation ahead of us before facing this unique challenge.”

The vehicle testing and development program is already underway, with test events planned to ensure the competitiveness of the Defenders at Dakar and in the W2RC. The team’s official debut will take place by the end of the year.
