Is Qatar the sponsor of the future Air Force One?

The news might be amusing if it weren’t so serious. Qatar is reportedly about to supply Donald Trump with his future Air Force One.

Although nothing is yet official, the White House and Qatar are officially in discussions about a Boeing 747-8 that could become the new Air Force One. The legendary American presidential aircraft seems more than ever ready to trade its vintage style, born from designer Raymond Loewy’s pen at the request of President John F. Kennedy, for a more modern and luxurious version.

Qatar claims that it is not a “gift,” but a “temporary availability.” However, according to American media, the aircraft could very soon join the presidential fleet. This prospect raises questions about the ethics and symbolism of this agreement. Rumors that Donald Trump might keep the aircraft personally after his term do little to clarify the situation.

Trump defended this potential acquisition on Truth Social: “It’s a GIFT, FOR FREE! The Democrats can’t stand it!” Always faithful to his straightforward style.

An American symbol

On the technical side, the current Air Force One fleet, consisting of two Boeing 747-200Bs from the 1990s, is beginning to show its age. These aircraft, equipped with bedrooms, offices, and conference rooms, still carry out their missions but no longer meet current standards. The Boeing 747-8 proposed by Qatar, dubbed the “flying palace,” offers a more modern and sophisticated alternative.

However, the aircraft requires modifications to meet security requirements and presidential needs. This process could take several years and be costly. Meanwhile, Boeing, initially tasked with providing a new generation of Air Force One, faces substantial delays, with deliveries scheduled for 2027 or 2028. Trump expressed his discontent in February, leaving open the possibility of sourcing from a competitor of the American aircraft manufacturer.

This possible agreement raises criticism, particularly regarding its legal and political implications. Nonetheless, Qatar is no stranger to spectacular gestures: in 2018, it had already gifted a luxury private jet to Turkey. Recall that Air Force One is one of the most secure planes in the world, armored and equipped with the most advanced defense technologies. Besides secure communication systems, it has electronic countermeasures capable of jamming enemy radars and equipment designed to deflect missiles. One wonders how the aircraft’s security can be guaranteed, especially considering the absence of bugs in thousands of kilometers of electrical wiring. Even American Hollywood studios have not considered the possibility of Air Force One being hacked by a Gulf emirate.
