Léon XIV Is a Rock n’ Roll Pope!
This page is translated from the original post "Léon XIV est un pape Rock n’Roll !" in French.

We know the strong connection between popes and their popemobiles, but Pope Leo XIV seems to have a soft spot for two wheels.
On September 3, 2025, at the Vatican, Leo XIV placed his blessing and signature on an extraordinary motorcycle, a BMW R 18 Transcontinental specially prepared for the occasion. An unusual, almost rock ‘n’ roll image that will leave a lasting impression.

This two-wheeler is not destined for the papal garage: it will be auctioned next October by Sotheby’s, under the aegis of Missio Austria, to fund children’s aid projects in Madagascar. A beautiful way to turn a beauty into hope.

The machine, donated by BMW Motorrad Germany and customized by dealer Witzel, is a unique model. Painted in pearlescent white, adorned with the Vatican coat of arms and exclusive details, it required true refinement work. The initiative came from Witzel and Thomas Draxler, founder of JESUS-BIKER, who wanted to merge mechanical passion and solidarity.
A holy bike
Before reaching Pope Leo XIV, the R 18 Transcontinental embarked on its own pilgrimage: a “Peace Ride” that started from Sennfeld on August 31, with stops in Schaafheim, Altötting, and Verona. Several motorcyclists, mostly riding BMW R 18s, accompanied this spiritual and mechanical procession, punctuated by religious services.

At the Vatican, Markus Flasch, head of BMW Motorrad, and Michael Sommer, director of Germany, presented the motorcycle to Pope Leo XIV after the general audience. “At first, it seemed like a bit of a crazy idea, but it has turned into a remarkable charitable campaign. I am happy that BMW Motorrad can support the children of Madagascar”, summarized Flasch.

Before being auctioned, this R 18 like no other will be displayed at BMW Welt in Munich from September 15 to October 7. A symbolic stop before a lucky collector acquires this piece of history, half-sacred, half-rock.
