Lexus Revolutionizes the Steering Wheel

With its unique steering wheel and steer-by-wire technology, the Lexus RZ introduces a new approach to electric driving.

With the launch of the new Lexus RZ at the end of December 2025, the Japanese premium brand is introducing a noticeable technical innovation: a unique steering wheel coupled with a steer-by-wire system, designed to transform the driving experience of electric vehicles.

Visually, the steering wheel of the Lexus RZ is immediately surprising. Its almost rectangular shape contrasts with the traditional round steering wheel and is more reminiscent of aviation than classic automobiles. But beyond the style, this design is primarily a response to a major technical evolution. Unlike conventional systems, where the steering wheel is mechanically linked to the wheels, steer-by-wire eliminates this physical connection. The driver’s commands are transmitted electronically, while information from the road is recalibrated and relayed through the steering system.

This technology allows for free adjustment of the steering ratio. The result: approximately 200 degrees of rotation are enough to go from maximum turn to the other, without ever having to cross hands. Driving becomes more intuitive, especially in the city or on winding roads, with shorter and more precise movements. According to initial test feedback, this configuration also provides a heightened sense of control when cornering, although it might take some time to get used to the handling.

Lexus combines this innovation with a more emotional approach to electric driving. On the RZ600e F SPORT Performance version, the Interactive Manual Drive mode simulates the sensations of a manual transmission thanks to paddles on the steering wheel, a feature designed to recreate driver engagement in an electric realm often deemed too smooth.

For Lexus, steer-by-wire could also play a strategic role. The brand believes that the lack of emotional appeal remains a barrier to the adoption of electric cars. By offering a different and more playful driving experience, the manufacturer hopes to make the Lexus RZ a true catalyst to democratize battery electric vehicles (BEVs) among a still hesitant audience, while asserting its technological edge in the premium segment.
