The upcoming Mazda MX-5 will be electrified

The next small Mazda MX-5 roadster, or Miata for purists, will indeed have an electrified version.

Mazda has confirmed that the next-generation MX-5 will be electrified, but the car manufacturer has not specified what form the electrification will take. 100% electric, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid? The entire Mazda lineup is expected to become at least partially electric by 2030, which represents a necessary step in the evolution of this legendary small sports car.

A Legend to Honor

The Mazda MX-5 has a well-deserved reputation as a small machine that delivers fun. Light, playful, and above all affordable, this small roadster has captivated generations of driving enthusiasts with wind in their hair and smiles on their faces. Mazda’s Vision Study model, a stunning sports car unveiled at the end of 2022, could be a preview of the electric Miata, or at least give an idea of its overall look. We like it!

Less range for more fun?

The challenge for Mazda will be managing weight. The compact size of the Miata could make it difficult to incorporate a high-capacity battery, and the added weight of the technology could detract from what made this car legendary. The Japanese manufacturer might first launch a hybrid MX-5 before developing a fully electric variant. Such a vehicle isn’t likely to be designed for hundreds of kilometers at a stretch. If driving enjoyment takes precedence over range, who would object?

We will have to wait until 2025 to learn more about this future MX-5, and until then Mazda and its new battery partner, Envision AESC, have time to align all the stars and ensure a bright future for the MX-5.
