The automotive market struggles to start in 2026

The private car market in France starts the year 2026 in a contrasting climate.

According to the latest data released by AAA Data, in January, registrations of new private cars decreased by 2%, against a general market decline of 7%. This result is less severe than that of company fleets, which fell by 15%, but nevertheless indicates a climate of hesitation among households.

The main factor driving dynamism remains electric social leasing, the effects of which were fully felt this month. This purchase assistance has caused a spike in registrations of electric models, bringing their share to 31% among individuals. The Renault 5 overwhelmingly dominates this segment, followed by the Renault Scénic and the Peugeot 208. However, this temporary surge obscures the overall reading of the market, as it relies on orders placed several months prior and is expected to gradually diminish over the quarter.

And after Leasing?

At the same time, a structural evolution is confirmed: the rise of long-term rental (LLD) among individuals. In January, this financing method grew by 42% and now accounts for 34% of registrations in this channel. Conversely, rental with an option to purchase (LOA) remains stable. This trend illustrates a changing relationship with car ownership, with a growing preference for use over outright purchase.

On the models side, some segments are thriving, notably city cars from segment B and small SUVs, supported by popular references like the Renault Clio or the Peugeot 2008. Mini city cars, although declining, are regaining interest thanks to the arrival of new electrified powertrains and the prospect of more accessible vehicles.
