New Peugeot 5008: What to Expect?

Peugeot will unveil the new 5008 tomorrow. Will this large 7-seater SUV find its place alongside its little brother, the 3008?

The first question that can be raised is whether the 5008 can still be categorized as a catch-all SUV. The 3008 can still pass for one, but a 7-seater vehicle is more akin to a minivan than an off-roader! However, in 2024, even with a large family, no one wants to drive a minivan anymore. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter much as this is all just marketing, which we leave to the specialists at the lion brand.

One thing is certain, it takes the STLA Medium platform and the style of the Peugeot 3008 with an elongated body just like the previous generation. The fastback line of the 3008 is expected to disappear in favor of a flat roof and a much more practical vertical rear to accommodate children and luggage. It should be slightly longer than the current model, which measures 4,640 mm. Let’s anticipate nearly 4.8 meters in length with the additional length compared to the 3008 primarily gained on the rear overhang. For comparison, its two designated rivals, the Renault Espace and the Skoda Kodiaq, measure 4,722 mm and 4,758 mm respectively.

No surprises are expected in the cabin, where we should find the console from the 3008, featuring the 21-inch curved panoramic i-Cockpit screen, the small steering wheel, and high-quality materials. The same goes for safety equipment, which includes the latest ADAS technologies developed by Stellantis.

The base engine will be a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder with a mild hybrid 48 V system, delivering 136 hp paired with the six-speed automatic transmission e-DCS6, which incorporates a 21 kW electric motor. Given the dimensions of the beast, it will clearly not be a speed demon, but that’s not what we ask of a minivan… or a large SUV, however you want to call it.

For the 100% electric side, that is, the E-5008, two versions with front motor and 73 kWh batteries will be available, offering either 157 kW (210 hp) or 170 kW (230 hp). According to the latest rumors, no dual motor all-wheel-drive version is planned to maximize space for the third row of seats and optimize the rear cargo space. Essentially sticking to the minivan spirit!
