In a week, Hyundai partners with General Motors and Volkswagen!

The big maneuvers are underway to counter the Chinese offensive, and Hyundai is not hesitating to forge surprising alliances.

The bloc formed by the Korean cousins Kia and Hyundai is capable of meeting all demands and offering solid alternatives to European, American, and of course, Asian productions. But the real danger comes from the Middle Kingdom, so Hyundai has embarked on a historic wave of alliances to establish a foothold on three continents.

On Friday, September 13, Hyundai and American General Motors (GM) signed a memorandum of understanding to explore various areas of collaboration in the fields of vehicles, supply chains, and clean energy technologies. Essentially, it’s a sharing of plans between good friends to reduce research and development costs.

A week later, Hyundai and the European Skoda announced in Prague a collaboration for the development of hydrogen technology and eco-friendly mobility solutions. After vehicle plans, here they are with a strong alliance on powertrains. Another nice move by the Koreans, and for those who don’t know, Skoda is part of the Volkswagen Group constellation.

No one really knows the details and stakes of these grand announcements. But the message is very clear. The Koreans are not afraid to form alliances with certain competitors who share the same values. Namely, unconventional manufacturers, producing on multiple continents and respecting labor rights. All that the European Commission today accuses Chinese manufacturers of not respecting. The future is also about sharing factories between manufacturers. Why build new units when the existing ones are oversized with the generalization of robots and the simplification of construction techniques? This new world is exciting, don’t you think?
