The Hybrid Corvette E-Ray Arrives!

The Corvette legend is about to write a new chapter in automotive history by abandoning all internal combustion, for a highly anticipated hybrid E-Ray version.

It has been exactly 70 years since the first Chevrolet Corvette was born in January 1953. To properly celebrate this anniversary, the owner General Motors unveiled today its electrified Corvette.

The technical sheet is enough to make enthusiasts salivate, with a maximum power of 655 horsepower. The Corvette E-Ray enters history as the brand’s fastest accelerating model, with a 0 to 97 km/h time of just 2.5 seconds. Technically, this hybrid Corvette is distinguished by its front engine located on the front train, with a fixed power of 160 hp. The magnificent 495 hp gasoline V8 is situated at the rear.

The hybrid system also includes a 1.9 kWh battery located between the seats, which recharges during deceleration or braking, similar to a good old Toyota Prius. It should thus be able to operate over very short distances in 100% electric mode, allowing access to city centers without emitting CO2.

For now, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are not yet known, but the second major advantage of the Corvette E-Ray is its ability to run its V8 on four cylinders when maximum power is not needed.

Maximum Braking

On the other hand, for sports driving enthusiasts, a specific setting is provided to allow both electric and combustion engines to operate in unison. The surge of horsepower will be controlled by standard carbon-ceramic brakes, which not only help reduce weight but also enhance braking power.

The release date for the 2023 Corvette E-Ray has not yet been finalized, but its price is already set at $104,300 (97,000 euros) for the coupe and $111,300 (103,000 euros) for the Targa version with an electrically foldable hard roof. For comparison, the Corvette Stingray starts at $64,500 (60,000 euros) in the United States.
