Renault Espace 6: An Electrified Generation? (Video)

The Renault Espace is already celebrating forty years and is taking the opportunity to undergo a complete renewal. A first teaser video already gives an idea of its design.

Even if the Nissan Prairie started the hostilities in 1982, the first true modern minivan is called Chrysler Voyager. Unveiled in 1983, it marked the rise of the American giant before being replaced by a less charismatic Chrysler Pacifica, which has the merit of offering a plug-in hybrid version. It predates the famous Renault Espace by a few months, whose presentation dates back to late 1983, with commercialization in 1984. Developed with Matra, it paved the way for this new generation of cars that optimize interior space for passenger comfort, with large glass surfaces, individual and modular seats, and a relatively spacious trunk. It was quickly adopted by families (production totaling 191,694 units).

Since then, four other generations have succeeded. The Renault Espace 2 (1991-1996) is still produced with Matra, and is more ambitious with the arrival of petrol V6 engines, especially for export, and even all-wheel drive. Its career was ultimately quite short, despite strong commercial success (317,225 units).

The third Renault Espace 3 (1996-2002) is the last of the Matra era. A continuation-oriented evolution, with more refined finishes, enhanced modularity, and the introduction of a rare GPL version. It was a success, with 365,323 units produced.

However, it is the Renault Espace 4 (2002-2014) that marked a milestone. First for its exceptional longevity, it appealed to wealthy families with its more upscale positioning and successfully competed with SUVs, a category then experiencing rapid growth. Under the hood, very large engines were available, including a Nissan V6 petrol and an Isuzu-origin V6 Diesel. Reliability was far from optimal on the early models, but the latter part of its career was more reassuring. Today, it is the most produced Renault Espace, with 372,692 units.

Launched in 2015, the Renault Espace 5 is now preparing to bow out. Flirting with SUVs in style, it managed to retain its legendary modularity, with a very practical seat folding system from the trunk. Penalized by the green tax, it was only sold with a large 190 hp diesel, still available in stock, with attractive discounts.

And now, the Renault Espace 6

Renault loves teaser videos, and confirms this with a new clip that hints at the curves of the upcoming Renault Espace 6. The diamond brand is tight-lipped about details, but we already know that this future model will be based on the CMF-CD technical platform used for the Renault Espace 5 and will be able to accommodate up to 7 passengers. It could also be equipped with light-hybrid engines of the e-POWER type. One thing is certain, it will be unveiled in spring 2023!
