The hybrid Corvette starting in 2023, followed by an electric Corvette

The automobile group General Motors has confirmed a hybrid version of its famous sports car Corvette, which will then be offered in 100% electric version.

Born in 1953, a symbol of power, the Corvette is a relatively accessible sports car (compared to a Ferrari or Aston Martin). This automobile is closely linked to its naturally aspirated V8 engine, which also ensures success in competition.

But times are changing, and so is its brand Chevrolet. The subsidiary of the General Motors group has decided to go fully electric by 2035. It was suspected that the Corvette would not be the first, although. The priority was given to the small Bolt, but subsequent vehicles were the big Hummer EV (under GMC brand) and then its cousin pickup Silverado.

First a hybrid Corvette

But it is official, the Corvette will indeed be electrified. A second shake-up for enthusiasts, after the transition of the front engine to a rear mid-engine layout. “We will offer an electrified version,” assured GM president Mark Reuss. It is still too early to determine what type of powertrain the sports car will use. The architecture of a traditional V8 gasoline engine operating with one or more motors has two options:

• hybrid to enhance performance
• plug-in hybrid with a substantial battery for real electric range

Either way, an electric motor will drive the front wheels. Reuss shared a video showing a prototype on snowy terrain with all-wheel drive. Also, it should be noted that the sound of the V8 is constantly active, pointing towards the first option above.

This would therefore be the first Chevrolet Corvette hybrid, but for purists, it’s necessary to brace oneself even more.

A warm electric Corvette

The head of the American manufacturer also added that a “100% electric” version will be available in the lineup. Mark Reuss, however, states that “the details and the name will come at a later date”. Nevertheless, we know that the name “Corvette E-Ray” exists in the works.

He also reveals the technical basis of the electric Corvette. The American sports car will use the Ultium platform from Hummer and Silverado, designed in partnership with LG. Additionally, it will feature “a heat recovery system from the batteries or motors, to heat the cabin” that will be used in other GM electric vehicles including the Cadillac Lyriq.

A related press release specifies that it “stores and reuses exterior and interior humidity, including the occupants’ body heat”. According to the executive, the range could increase by up to 10% thanks to this process, imitating that of thermal engines.

This function could also better prepare the rapid charging of the batteries, by heating them in advance. This allows for faster power increase, and thus reduces charging time by a few minutes.

But when will the electric Corvette arrive? According to our estimates, it will probably be until 2025 at the earliest.
