Chased out of Europe, this Ford survives exiled in China
Missing from Europe for several years, the Ford Mondeo continues its career in China where it is reinvented as a large hybrid crossover with strong ambitions.
While its name disappeared from the European automotive landscape in 2022, the Ford Mondeo continues to thrive in China. The American manufacturer has just unveiled the new Mondeo Sport Edition at the 2026 Chongqing International Auto Show, proving that this historic name still holds commercial value in the world’s largest automotive market.
This new variant adopts an elevated fastback silhouette, sitting between a sedan and an SUV. Measuring 4.92 meters in length with a wheelbase of 2.95 meters, it positions itself in the large family car segment, a market where local competition is particularly fierce.
A Ford in China
Under the hood, Ford relies on a hybrid powertrain combining a 2.0 EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. The total output is a combined 308 hp. According to the data provided by the manufacturer, the average fuel consumption is 5.99 l/100 km in the WLTC cycle, while the theoretical range reaches 915 kilometers.
Unlike many Chinese manufacturers that favor large-battery plug-in hybrids or 100% electric models, Ford continues to advocate for a traditional hybrid architecture. This strategy aims to appeal to drivers looking to reduce their consumption without relying on recharging.
The Mondeo Sport also benefits from a significant technological upgrade. Its multimedia system features a next-generation voice assistant capable of interacting more naturally thanks to artificial intelligence. A 540-degree panoramic camera is also included in the program.
