680 Hybrid Horsepower for the Mercedes-AMG GLC

A few weeks after the debut of the new Mercedes-AMG GLC sporty SUV, here is its Coupé version

The new GLC Coupé completes the AMG performance range of the star-brand and moves away from the traditional V8 in favor of a 4-cylinder Turbo Hybrid. Impressive proportions match its performance and… its price!

To achieve the specific look of a true AMG, the recipe is fairly simple. An oversized radiator grille to cool the powerful mechanical heart, an A-shaped front splitter with carefully placed small fins to guide airflow, and wider wheel arches. A distinctive rear bumper features an integrated diffuser to balance the volumes. Add dual-exit—or trapezoidal—specific exhaust pipes and 20 or even 21-inch wheels, and the beast is ready to cover kilometers very quickly.

S for Sporty, E for Excessive

Leading the new hybrid lineup, the GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE Coupé is the first high-performance hybrid SUV coupé from the brand, with a combined power of 500 kW (680 hp). Despite this power, combined fuel consumption remains contained at 7.5 l/100 km.

The core of this new Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupé model is the 2.0-liter AMG four-cylinder engine. Internally known as M139l (l for longitudinal installation), it is currently the only mass-produced engine in the world charged by an electrically assisted turbocharger using exhaust gases. This technology is directly derived from that successfully used by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team in the top-tier motorsport category for many years. In the GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE Coupé, the M139l produces 476 hp at 6,725 rpm. It is the most powerful serial four-cylinder engine in the world. The maximum torque of the combustion engine is 545 Nm at 5,250-5,500 rpm.

The 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor is mounted on the rear axle and integrated with a two-speed electrically switching transmission. It can thus convert its power more directly into propulsion for an extra boost during startup, acceleration, or overtaking.

AMG Hybrid at the service of virtue

The system power of 500 kW (680 hp) and the maximum system torque of 1,020 Nm deliver impressive driving performance: acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 275 km/h.

The GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE Coupé can be ordered as an exclusive 1st edition in matte graphite gray or matte high-tech silver for one year. A matte charcoal film visually stretches the vehicle’s sides. The 21-inch cross-spoke AMG forged wheels are painted matte black. The highly polished rim edges provide an attractive contrast with the yellow painted brake calipers, a visual reminder of the high-performance AMG composite braking system.

The price has not yet been announced, but you will need to spend over 135,000 euros to acquire this hybrid gem. A consolation: with combined CO₂ emissions contained at 170 g/km, the environmental tax drops to 5,700 euros according to the 2023 scale, compared to 50,000 euros for the latest AMG thermal versions. The hybrid opens new perspectives for ultra-sporty SUVs!
