Henry Ford: the man who made the car accessible to everyone

On April 7, 1947, Henry Ford, one of the most influential pioneers of the global automotive industry, passed away.

Founder of the Ford Motor Company, he transformed the car, once a luxury reserved for a minority, into an object accessible to the masses, while revolutionizing industrial production methods.

Born on July 30, 1863, in Dearborn, Michigan, Henry Ford took an early interest in mechanics. Before founding his own company, he worked in workshops, acquiring solid experience in engineering and combustion engine design. This expertise allowed him to create several vehicle prototypes before launching the famous Ford Model T in 1908. The car quickly became a symbol of independence and mobility for the general public, thanks to its robustness, simplicity, and affordable price.

But Ford did not settle for just manufacturing cars. He also revolutionized industrial production by introducing the moving assembly line in 1913. This innovation drastically reduced the time needed to assemble a vehicle from over 12 hours to about 90 minutes. It allowed Ford to mass-produce while offering higher wages with the famous “Five Dollar Day” of 1914, which doubled the average income of his workers and reduced turnover.

His legacy is immense, even though some of his political positions and controversial publications have tarnished his reputation. Nevertheless, Henry Ford remains an iconic figure of industrial innovation and the dream of accessible mobility for all.
