Starting from €24,600, the Ford Tourneo Outperforms the Renault Kangoo

Renault Kangoo faces a new major competitor on its road with the Ford Tourneo Courier.

The market for compact vans is slightly losing speed, but new models continue to multiply because margins remain lucrative for manufacturers. Originally developed for the utility vehicle sector, these “civilized” versions therefore have a production cost that is already well amortized.

And then, some customers are ultra-loyal, attracted by the unbeatable price/space ratio inside. A family on the move would do better to opt for a compact van than a large and expensive SUV.

As the market leader and inventor of this segment, the Renault Kangoo enjoys a comfortable career. It is even offered in Mercedes Classe T or Nissan Townstar. But here’s the catch: Ford hasn’t given up and is returning at the start of 2024 with its new Tourneo Courier.

And it’s fair to say that this rival has sharpened its weapons, with up-to-date prices, features, and performance.

Pricing

Starting at €24,600, the Ford Tourneo Courier is technically €1,300 less expensive than the entry-level Renault Kangoo. The basic trim is called Trend and offers only one engine option, a 1.0-liter turbo developing 125 horsepower. It can be paired either with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic (+€2000!).

For comparison, the Renault Kangoo opts for a 1.3-liter engine with more torque but limited to 100 horsepower.

In terms of fuel consumption, it’s almost a tie: 6.7 liters / 100 km for the Ford versus 6.8 liters for the Renault. However, the Tourneo has an advantage in CO2 emissions: 151 g versus 155 g. This might seem insignificant, but it implies a tax penalty of €2,370 for the Ford versus €3,119 for the Renault, resulting in a €749 difference.

For a basic trim, the Ford Tourneo Courier Trend really offers good value for money. With its trunk capacity ranging from 570 to 2,160 liters, it will be a fantastic companion for family trips. That said, the larger and longer Renault Kangoo still outperforms in terms of interior space, with a cargo volume ranging from 775 to 3,500 liters. That’s the real dilemma between these two competitors. The Kangoo is also available in a 100% electric version.

The Ford is slightly smaller but also less expensive and much better equipped. Can the Renault succeed solely on its spaciousness? It’s up to you to decide your priorities.
