Europe: 42% of cars are hybrid and electric in January 2023
This page is translated from the original post "Europe : 42% de voitures hybrides et électriques en janvier 2023" in French.

Car sales in Europe are increasingly characterized by electric and hybrid vehicles, while diesel continues to decline further.
Here is good news for tracking the electrification of new cars in Europe. ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) now publishes monthly reports, no longer quarterly. After the 2022 review by powertrain, here is the report for January 2023.
Diesel Disappears in the Netherlands
Last month, hybrids were the growing segment, with a +22% increase year-on-year according to ACEA, representing 27% of registrations. This trend is seen across almost all countries, including Hungary where hybrids account for over 43%, or 37% in Italy (under the influence of Fiat 500 and Panda micro-hybrids).
However, this is still not enough to catch up with gasoline cars, which remain dominant in Europe with nearly 39% market share. Gasoline is a fuel type with extremes, from 76% of the market in Bulgaria to less than 2% in Norway. Behind that, diesel continues to decline despite overall market growth, falling to 14% of sales, and is even close to disappearing in the Netherlands (1% of total).

France No.1 in Plug-in Hybrids, Norway Dominates Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles have not yet surpassed hybrids, but have increased by 14%, making up more than one in ten cars. As usual, Norway has the highest electric share (66%), followed by Sweden (29%), Iceland (27%), Finland (26%), and Denmark (21%). France ranks only 15th with 13.1%. In raw numbers, Germany leads (18,136 units) ahead of the UK (17,294 units) and France (14,629 units).
Plug-in hybrids are clearly no longer popular, with a 9% decline and only 7% of sales. Surprisingly, France leads in this segment, with over 10,000 registrations (+30%), ahead of the UK, Germany, and Belgium, but Sweden has the highest percentage, nearly one in four cars being plug-in hybrid.
