Nissan is preparing to launch several new electric vehicles in the coming years, including one that leaves us perplexed.

During the unveiling of the new generation of the LEAF, now a crossover, the manufacturer also revealed a preview of an “adventure-oriented” electric SUV. But what exactly is it?

This model features a more boxy and robust design, reminiscent of the X-Trail, an iconic SUV that has now become more niche. The silhouette shown hints at a vehicle slightly more compact than the rugged Pathfinder or Terrano, which it can also resemble. Is this a simple nod to the past, or will the X-Trail be reborn in a fully electric form?

The idea of an electric X-Trail seems the most likely scenario. If so, this SUV could compete with models like the Hyundai Santa Fe Electric or perhaps the Volkswagen Scout—if, as hoped, it makes its way to Europe. With electric motors providing instant torque and increased power, a trail-ready SUV seems perfectly aligned with market expectations.

In the meantime, Nissan will expand its electric lineup this year with the new LEAF, joining the Ariya, while also introducing the Micra. But the Micra, intended to represent the entry-level segment, is essentially a facelifted Renault 5, closely resembling its French cousin. It seems to reflect Renault’s identity more than Nissan’s. As for the LEAF, long emblematic of the company’s electric shift, it is now a crossover SUV, moving away from its original philosophy. This strategic repositioning suggests Nissan is making opportunistic choices rather than forging its own identity. While specifications and pricing for the SUV remain unknown, this teaser raises many questions. Does this visual hide a future bestseller, or is it merely a statement of intent? Only time will tell.
