Volkswagen ID. Tiguan: the electric SUV for 2026?

Following the rumor of a new electric ID. Golf, the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is emerging for the future generation of the family SUV.

Gradually, Volkswagen’s new strategy in electric cars seems to be taking shape. A new model joining the manufacturer’s plan, a future family SUV could bear the famous Tiguan name.

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan scheduled for 2026

While Volkswagen will not reveal its detailed plan for a few weeks, the new technical basis is known. The German group will update its current MEB platform through the “MEB Plus”, starting in 2026. This decision is a consequence of the delay of the next-generation SSP, which was supposed to begin this year. It would be postponed at best to 2028 to host the Volkswagen Trinity sedan, a future technological showcase.

Based on the MEB Plus, a new electric SUV is in development. According to the German media Handelsblatt, it is expected to be named Volkswagen ID. Tiguan. CEO Oliver Blume reportedly said that customers want to keep the current names. It will not just be a badge change but also a style update. The removal of design boss Jozef Kaban in favor of Stefan Sielaff (from Bentley) should alter the appearance of future Volkswagen electric models. As for features, the company has already mentioned faster charging times and better range.

Electric Golf, Tiguan, or even Passat?

The turning point is said to be the ID. Life concept, intended to represent Volkswagen’s next compact in 2025. Too boxy and unemotional, it would give way to the next generation of Golf, as we learned a few days ago.

The VW ID. Tiguan SUV, successor to the ID.4, is heading in the same direction as the upcoming ID. Golf, which will replace the ID.3. What about the all-new ID.7? Could it be renamed ID. Passat before its release?
