Volkswagen ID Buzz: the electric van will have a 440 km range

The new generation of Volkswagen ID Buzz Combis will be 100% electric, and provides new details before its presentation in March.

In the 1960s, the Combi was the vehicle of escape in the style of camper vans and hippies. This van is set to make a comeback, but silently. Yes, the new Volkswagen ID Buzz will run on electricity.

21 years of waiting since the first prototype!

Reviving the Combi has been a long-standing dream. Concept cars have come and gone, each different: Microbus in 2001, Bulli in 2011, leading up to the official launch in 2017. Five years ago, the prototype ID Buzz caused a stir with its nostalgic silhouette, powered by an electric motor.

In 2022, it is ready for commercialization. Volkswagen confirmed that the series model will debut on March 9, during a dedicated presentation. For now, the final design remains hidden behind camouflaged prototypes currently touring European roads. But they are having difficulty hiding their secrets.

Two ID Buzz models presented on March 9

These colorful prototypes indeed showcase two different versions. One features a tailgate (see photo), the other has two doors instead. Volkswagen confirmed that the ID Buzz will come in a passenger transport version (shuttle or minivan, as you like), and the ID Buzz Cargo for utility purposes. Both will be built on the MEB platform, shared with the SUV ID.5.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz shuttle does not disclose details about its batteries but promises up to 440 km of range, according to the manufacturer. The commercial van will offer a 420 km range and a payload capacity of 700 kilograms. It cannot compete with Stellantis models like the Peugeot e-Expert (1,000 kg) or the Mercedes eVito (868 kg), but it will surpass them in range (maximum 330 km). Patience is necessary for the prices, the manufacturer may reveal more early March.

It is at this moment that preorders for the ID Buzz will open, with first deliveries expected in the fall. Volkswagen aims for 10,000 units annually, including 8,000 for private customers.
