The 2022 Volkswagen ID.3 reduces its lineup to the sole Active version

Simplifying production in response to the component shortage, the Volkswagen ID.3 is now available only in a single special edition Active.

With the Covid-19 crisis, automakers have been heavily impacted by industrial repercussions. In addition to a declining auto market in 2021 following the disastrous 2020, it is the shortage of components and logistics issues that are disrupting activity.

A Unique Special Edition “Component Shortage”!

Volkswagen was one of the most affected brands, losing out significantly to the solid world’s number one automaker Toyota (8.9 million vs. 10.5 million vehicles). Already struggling early in its career due to incomplete cars, the electric ID.3 failed to establish itself in France, having left the Top 10 bestsellers in 2021. Moreover, it still needs to revamp its range. Recently, it had already discontinued the small 45 kWh battery option.

In February 2022, it received a new special edition, which is not only aimed at restoring the car’s image. The brand explains transparently that this Volkswagen ID.3 Active exists to “streamline and optimize production” as well as “reduce delivery times”. According to them, this version would be “a deliverable offer to customers in the best possible time despite restrictions related to the microprocessor shortage”.

To top it all off, Volkswagen is temporarily discontinuing all other versions from its catalog. The City, Life, Family, Tech Max, and Tour trims are gone. Also, the large-battery 77 kWh variants “Pro S” are no longer available in the lineup, now only found on the sister model Cupra Born VZ.

What Does This Volkswagen ID.3 Active Offer?

Like classic special automotive editions, this electric compact is well-equipped. First, the Volkswagen ID.3 Active is based on the Pro Performance version, with an intermediate 58 kWh battery, offering 409 to 415 km of range depending on the WLTP cycle.

Its rear motor develops 150 kW or 204 horsepower, with a torque of 310 Nm. Charging is possible up to 11 kW in three-phase AC, and 120 kW on fast chargers like Electra via the Combo port.

The equipment includes, among others, a 10-inch central touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a rearview camera. Visually, options are limited with the 18-inch “East Derry” wheels installed, though 19-inch “Andoya” wheels are available as an option.

Color options include 4 choices (in addition to the standard dark gray), with white, light gray, and turquoise available. The recent red color is also offered, but black has been removed from the options.

The Price of the ID3 Active

Finally, the price of this special edition ID.3 Active leans towards the upper range. At €44,680, it closely approaches the former Tech trim and is competitive with its rivals. Here’s a quick comparison with the Renault Mégane E-Tech, Hyundai Kona, and Peugeot e-2008.

Volkswagen has not specified how long the range of the electric compact will remain so limited. However, the brand clarifies that older models are “available in stock within the network”.
