Volkswagen Golf: A Surprising Return to Electric Vehicles?

Because of the delay of the new generation of electric cars, the manufacturer is reportedly studying an electric version of its star, the Volkswagen Golf.

Not everything is rosy at Volkswagen with electric cars. While the ID.4 is bringing smiles to the German group, the infotainment issues persist on the platform with an upcoming welcomed update. Most importantly, the future “Trinity” electric generation faces a huge delay. According to Automotive News, the 2026 date is being pushed back to 2030. With this SSP platform base, VW hoped to catch up with Tesla and dominate the market. But what can be done to fill the gap?

A New Takeoff for the VW Golf with Electric?

For a long time, the Volkswagen Golf has been the number 1 car in the European market. But its position is fragile in 2022, with sales slowing down. From January to September, the Golf dropped 25%, totaling 132,989 units according to Dataforce figures.

To address this situation and the delay of Trinity, the Volkswagen Golf could return in electric form. This is not unprecedented, as this car has existed since 2014. It was, after all, the brand’s reference electric vehicle alongside the small e-up!. However, this new e-Golf, or perhaps Volkswagen ID. Golf, might not arrive before 2026.

Why so late, knowing that the MEB platform already exists? It takes time for design and to adapt the Wolfsburg factory (Germany) to produce this model. The brand also has a busy schedule, with a new ID.3 in 2023, then the ID. Aero sedan to challenge Tesla’s Model 3, before the small ID.1 and ID.2 in 2025.
