Unknown in Europe, here is the best-selling American electric car in the United States

Yet technically outdated, the Chevrolet Bolt is the best-selling electric car in the United States. Here’s its story.

With the rise of electric cars and their rapid growth, General Motors had a great opportunity to finally find its place in Europe. Because the group is turbocharging this technology, where it even hopes to be profitable by 2025. Although the return of Cadillac has already been approved, Chevrolet has yet to receive its itinerary for the Old Continent. Too bad.

At the bowtie brand, you can notably find the Chevrolet Bolt EV, an electric compact. At 4.15 meters long, it has a power of 200 horsepower, and its range is around 400 kilometers. Similar in caliber to a Renault Mégane E-Tech, Volkswagen ID.3, or MG4, it would definitely have its place on our roads.

Because in the United States, the Bolt was sold in 50,000 units in 2024, a record nobody expected, not even General Motors. This makes it the best-selling electric vehicle produced in the US, ahead of the Mustang Mach-E. An extremely impressive number considering that the Bolt’s technical platform is now seven years old and that Chevrolet does not have the rapid charging speeds of most newer rivals.

What is the secret to this success? Of course, the price. It dropped in 2023 from $31,000 to $25,000. Then there is the size. In the land of “Big is beautiful,” nothing is ever too big or too tall… but at some point, monstrous SUVs and three-row minivans become the enemy of good, especially in the city. And since the offering for 4-meter vehicles is almost exclusively European, the most conservative customers turned to Chevrolet. At this price, the Bolt becomes an ideal second or third vehicle for the household.

But for now, the Bolt is on the way out. Production recently ended, and stocks will disappear like snow in the sun at dealerships. Just enough time for Chevrolet to prepare the 2025 version, which will use the Ultium platform already employed by Cadillac. Hope remains that the planets continue to align favorably.
