The Tesla Roadster Takes a Turn for the Tasteless Joke

By continually postponing the deadline, the Tesla Roadster has become more of a joke than a car. And even the worst jokes come to an end.

The second-generation Roadster is the running gag of Silicon Valley, a rolling meme, or rather not yet rolling, that regularly attempts to make headlines to remind us of its existence. And as luck would have it, once again, it resurfaced right in the midst of the quarterly results presentation. A little magic trick from Elon Musk to divert attention? Who knows.

What is certain is that Tesla had everything to give birth to a true electric sports car, sleek and sharp, in the spirit of the first Roadster with its Lotus Elise DNA as a model, therefore much lighter than the first iteration. A car for pleasure, brutal and alive, in line with what the electric transition could offer that is most exhilarating. But no, instead we are promised a technical aberration, a kind of circus monster with integrated SpaceX rockets, capable of doing 0 to 100 km/h in less than 1 second. It’s hard to believe. Or rather, a nightmare.

Then here comes the sub-prefect!

Since 2017, nothing concrete, no rolling prototype, no real technical specifications, no production start. Just outrageous announcements with 1,000 km of range, over 400 km/h at top speed, and a vertical takeoff option. All sprinkled with marketing worthy of a Marvel movie. And while the media swallow the repeated announcements whole, the customers who paid $50,000 in advance are biting their nails.

With the Standard Model Y, Tesla does not fix any of its problems

The latest update? An “epic” demonstration promised for the end of 2025. Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of engineering, confirmed that development is underway, and that Elon Musk saw “super cool” things last week. In the meantime, this announcement changes nothing about the core issue. You don’t develop a supercar by tweeting whimsical promises.

The Tesla Roadster could be a masterpiece of technology. For now, it’s just a very expensive mirage.
