A Small Feature That Changes Everything on the New Tesla Model Y
This page is translated from the original post "Un p’tit truc en plus qui change tout sur la nouvelle Tesla Model Y" in French.

When a new car model is released, whether it’s a Tesla or otherwise, we inevitably look out for the latest updates.
Last night, Tesla unveiled its new Model Y “Juniper” in China. Our American friends will probably complain again, but what can you do… the heart of electric cars beats in China, it’s a fact. This model, which is not a completely new car but a facelift of the current model, features a completely redesigned exterior and notable improvements including increased range. A “Launch Edition” version with exclusive materials and badges is available from launch.
However, a subtle but significant detail caught the attention of the most attentive observers. In fact, there are two! The first is a hole in the front trunk space, the famous Frunk, which allows it to be washed with high-pressure water without spending three hours mopping up. But you probably guessed we’re not going to write an article about that… others have already done so before us anyway. No, the most important addition is a camera on the front bumper. This new equipment, briefly mentioned on Tesla’s Chinese website, is supposed to provide a wider field of view for the autonomous driving assistant. It will likely also improve the Auto Parking capabilities.
Relying solely on cameras and abandoning radars and other Lidar tech, Tesla needs a very specific technology, and this additional element should increase the precision of its autopilot system and enhance environmental perception.
It’s hard not to think about Tesla’s ambitions in the Robotaxi domain when seeing the addition of this camera, announced publicly in October 2024 at the We Robot event. Other recent models released before this presentation, such as the Model 3 “Highland,” do not have it. This naturally raises questions for owners who invested in the Full Self-Driving (FSD) option on older vehicles. Will their cars become truly autonomous without this hardware update? Stay tuned.
