The true Smart bows out

Smart Fortwo

After a period of slow decline despite the switch to electric, the latest Smart Fortwo has rolled off the production lines.

With its compact dimensions and look that is quite close to the original Smart, the EQ Fortwo continued to embody the brand’s initial concept. The entry of Geely into the company’s ownership changed the game and ultimately sealed the fate of this model, which was still co-produced with Mercedes and no longer aligned with the plans laid out by the Chinese management. Orders for the EQ Fortwo were officially closed at the end of April 2023, and a year later, the last customer received their small Smart.

Smart Focused on Its Electric SUVs

Under the leadership of Geely, which now owns the brand, Smart has entered a new chapter of its relatively young history. In addition to definitively abandoning internal combustion engines, the manufacturer has shifted its market positioning and is trying to approach premium standards. The first milestone of this transformation was the launch of the Smart #1, an electric SUV, and its coupe variant, the Smart #3, a coupé-style SUV, both priced at less than €40,000 in base trim.

A replacement for the Fortwo does not seem to be on the immediate agenda. However, in the longer term, there is nothing to suggest that the manufacturer will not try its luck again in the micro-city car segment.
