Electric cars are more desirable than Diesels in the used market

Between the decline of Diesel and the maturing of electric after-sales service, the balance is shifting in the used car market.

According to the latest survey from La Centrale, in a global context of significant and unprecedented decline, recent electric vehicles are becoming more affordable and accessible than Diesel vehicles of the same age.

The general sentiment of decreased purchasing power and political uncertainties is affecting all layers of the French economy, and the used car market is no exception. All age groups and all types of engines are experiencing a marked price decline this year. The frenzy surrounding the new car market, with bonuses and endless discounts, also gives ideas to used car customers who are no longer hesitant to negotiate.

The honeymoon between the French public and Diesel is coming to an end, but this engine type still holds value in the used market. With the tax already paid, they remain a sensible choice for high-mileage drivers who do not enter ZFEs and other restricted Crit’Air zones. There’s something for everyone!

Style Bonus?

But everything has its time, and electric vehicles less than 2 years old are for the first time cheaper than Diesel vehicles of the same age. This makes sense since electric vehicles benefit from the latest technological developments and modern designs, while manufacturers largely are no longer developing new Diesel models.

According to La Centrale, electric vehicles aged 2 to 4 years now cost an average of 3,700 euros less than their Diesel counterparts. For electric cars aged 4 to 5 years, the difference rises to 2,500 euros less than Diesel vehicles of the same age. The trust factor should not be overlooked either. The stereotypes about electric cars being unreliable and dangerous due to the risk of catching fire at any moment are fading. The public is slowly beginning to accept that electric cars are reliable and that their maintenance is easy… just like Diesels!
