BYD Officially on Sale in France

The Chinese manufacturer arrives in France with a catalog of three models, but are they relevant?

To make a place in the sun, it’s necessary to tick some boxes to offer something more than just an additional offer. You need to play on prices, technology, financing, customer service, or marketing. In the case of the new Chinese player BYD (Build Your Dreams), it’s hard to say for now. Because of the three models currently available, only the small SUV ATTO 3 qualifies for the eco-bonus.

During our visit at the Paris Motor Show in October 2022, we were not overly impressed by the quality of certain materials. The prices announced at the time have since increased, the promised ATTO 3 for 38,000 euros is now available starting at 43,690 euros (before a 5,000 euro bonus). At this price, the Chinese model directly competes with a Tesla Model Y, which is much more refined and reassuring for the switch to electric. WLTP certification provides 420 km of range with a consumption of 15.6 kWh/100 km, but this value seems unrealistic in real-world conditions. It will likely be better to count on 20 kWh/100 km, roughly 300 km of driving range.

Next are the TANG and HAN models, a large SUV (WLTP range of 400 km) and a sedan (WLTP range of 521 km), whose prices will naturally exclude them from the market: €70,800 for the first, €71,160 for the second. At this price, with no bonus, the competition is more prestigious. Therefore, it seems unlikely that we will see many BYD vehicles in France with such an offering.
