Tesla turns a punishment into a selling point!
The Tesla Model 3 is set to see its customs fees increase at the beginning of July. What to do? Well, buy one as soon as possible, of course!
What’s great about Tesla is that there’s never a dull moment. Every day has its little story, its Easter Egg on the website, or its controversy stirred up by the lively Elon Musk.
The European Commission has decided to impose customs duties of up to nearly 50% on electric vehicles produced in China, in order to sanction the alleged subsidies provided by Beijing to its manufacturers to help them compete with, or crush according to some viewpoints, European competition. Brussels informed automobile manufacturers on Wednesday that it would provisionally apply additional duties ranging from 17% to 38% on electric vehicles imported from China starting next month. These additional taxes will be added to the existing 10% customs duty on all vehicles. The amount of additional duties depends on the cooperation of manufacturers in the investigation launched several months ago. For example, the good student BYD gets 17% while the failing MG is hit with 38.1%!
For Tesla, nothing is decided because the manufacturer, even though it produces its Model 3 in China, remains very much American. It’s assumed that it will inherit an average additional tax of around 21%, but what if it doesn’t receive any Chinese subsidies? Manufacturers have until July 4 to plead their case, and there is no guarantee that these customs fees will actually be applied, as Beijing’s counterattack could be fierce and not limited to just automobiles.
But at Tesla, just to be safe, you are encouraged to hurry and purchase your Model 3 before the end of the month; you never know… and it clears out the stocks!
