Tesla Continues to Dream Bigger in Berlin

The expansion works of Tesla’s German Gigafactory in Grünheide, near Berlin, are expected to begin in a few months.

Currently, Tesla is slowing down the Mexico Gigafactory project due to numerous uncertainties. This is a boon for the European site, which is seeing its development budgets increase.

The American manufacturer plans to start expanding its Grünheide factory in the first half of 2024. Initially, the main building of the factory will be modernized to accommodate future equipment, including new presses that will allow for the construction of chassis in a single piece. A water recycling plant will then be built. In the coming years, a second production hall and a battery recycling plant will be added to the facility’s resources.

Tesla reportedly intends to double Grünheide’s production capacity from 500,000 units to one million electric vehicles per year and to increase battery storage capacity from the current 50 gigawatt-hours per year to 100 gigawatt-hours in the future.

The expansion plans for the factory have been made public, which has naturally led to over 1,000 objections to the project. Most concerns from residents and environmental organizations focus on the factory’s water consumption and other environmental impacts.

These objections are currently being discussed among residents, authorities, and Tesla, a debate that will determine whether these ambitious plans are approved.
