Tesla softens the braking of the Model Y

A software update introduces more gradual braking on the latest generation Tesla Model Y.

Tesla continues to improve its vehicles remotely. With software update 2026.8, the American automaker introduces a new feature called “Comfort Braking,” exclusively for the recent versions of the Tesla Model Y.

This feature aims to make the vehicle’s complete stop smoother. According to the technical notes revealed by Teslarati, the system now offers a softer feeling during conventional braking phases, especially when the car comes to a full stop. The goal is to avoid the small jolts that can sometimes occur at very low speeds.

A braking system already largely electronic

This software evolution is based on the major technical modifications introduced with the “Juniper” facelift of the electric SUV. The model now relies on a partially “by-wire” braking system, combining energy recovery and mechanical braking.

Specifically, when the driver presses the pedal, the car prioritizes regenerative braking via the electric motor first, before utilizing the brake pads if more deceleration power is needed. This operation not only improves energy efficiency but also makes the transition between different types of braking almost imperceptible.

The system also uses two independent master cylinders, one of which can be controlled directly by the vehicle’s automated systems, especially during the use of Autopilot or Full Self-Driving.

The strategic advantage of OTA updates

The arrival of “Comfort Braking” primarily illustrates one of Tesla’s significant strengths: the ability to modify the behavior of an already delivered vehicle through remote updates (OTA).

Over the years, these updates have already improved the management of regenerative braking, acoustic insulation, and various driver assistance functions. In some cases, they have even been used to correct technical issues without a trip to the workshop.
