The Tesla Model 3: France’s top premium vehicle

The American electric sedan Tesla Model 3 has taken the lead in the premium sector, surpassing the German brands specialized in the segment—Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

In France, as in Europe, a German trio has dominated the premium automobile market for several decades. The brands Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have made it their specialty, competing until now for the title of number one. But if we look at units sold by model, Tesla is disrupting this well-established order.

Tesla’s Top Model

Because yes, it is not a Mercedes-Benz A-Class, a BMW Series 3, or an Audi Q3 that claims the top spot in the premium market in France. According to data from Jato Dynamics, the Tesla Model 3 was number one in 2022. The electric sedan registered 17,005 units, an impressive figure but still below the premium market (-5%).

The American brand also recorded the best growth of the year, with a 11.7% market share, compared to 1.5% for Cupra and its Born. Its Tesla Model Y is also the most dynamic model compared to the previous year, surpassing 10,000 units.

In total, Mercedes-Benz retains the premium crown with 19.3% share (-0.1), while BMW (18.2%, +0.8) takes second place from Audi (17.5%, -1.5). Tesla is thus fourth, ahead of Mini, DS, and Volvo.

A Hit for the Tesla Model 3 in 2023?

If the Model 3 is the most popular high-end car, it has indeed declined compared to 2021. With a -32% drop, the American has lost its place as the top electric vehicle face to the Peugeot e-208 and the Dacia Spring.

To start 2023 with a bang, and perhaps reclaim the throne across all categories, Tesla is betting big. The manufacturer has launched a real sale period, with a price reduction of 10% to 16%. With a new starting price of €44,990, the electric sedan benefits from the new eco-bonus of €5,000 to €7,000. However, prices remain higher than at the beginning of 2022, when the range started at €43,690.
