After a difficult year in 2025, Tesla seems to be bouncing back in France. In August 2026, registrations of the American brand surged by nearly 279%. This spectacular recovery, however, should be approached with caution.
Tesla is coming back strong. Very strong indeed. In August 2026, the American brand registered 5,038 new cars in France, representing a 278.5% year-on-year increase. This performance allows it to climb to seventh place in the French market with a 5.3% market share.
The main driver of this rebound is obviously the Tesla Model Y. With 4,622 registrations, the electric SUV even took the top spot in the French market for the month, across all powertrains. It far surpasses its main electric rival, the Renault 5, with its 2,316 units.
Tesla is particularly benefiting from a context that is highly favorable to electric vehicles. In August, 36,159 electric cars were registered in France, accounting for 38% of the market and a 113% year-on-year increase. In the first eight months of 2026, electric vehicles now represent 30% of French registrations.
Tesla remains heavily dependent on the Model Y
Is the turnaround definitively secured? Caution is advised. First, because the spectacular +279% in August is calculated against an exceptionally weak August 2025. Secondly, because Tesla remains highly dependent on the Model Y, which accounts for more than nine out of ten registrations of the brand this month.
Moreover, the situation remains very mixed across Europe. In August, Tesla grew by 104% in Denmark, but saw declines of 79% in Norway and Spain, 41% in Sweden, 37% in Portugal, and 36% in Italy.
Nonetheless, the French trend is deeper than just a good month: since January, Tesla has recorded 36,160 registrations in France, up by 148.4%.
The turnaround is indeed real in France. The question now is whether it can become sustainable… and European.
