Tesla and the Cybertruck: Low-Cost Propulsion

Tesla offers a high-range Cybertruck but with rear-wheel drive only and stripped of its equipment.

Tesla presents an astonishing version of its Cybertruck, a rear-wheel drive (RWD) model available in the United States and Mexico for $72,235, which is just under €64,000. This model provides an improved range but at a higher price than initially announced and with a notable reduction in features.

First introduced in the Middle East under the name « Cybertruck Long Range », this pickup truck is distinguished by its single motor located on the rear axle. Unlike the all-wheel drive version, announced with a 500-kilometer range, this model reaches 563 kilometers. An increase largely thanks to the modest 18-inch tire setup. This suggests it uses the same battery as the Dual Motor and Cyberbeast versions. This launch also likely marks the abandonment of the $50,000 model, long announced but never commercialized.

A big pickup without all-wheel drive and poorly equipped…

However, this new version comes with significant compromises. All-wheel drive disappears due to the absence of a front motor, and several features have been removed. Tesla replaced the motorized tailgate cover with a soft version, offered as an option for $750. Additionally, tinted windows, adaptive suspension, the rear light bar, the rear passenger screen, the noise reduction system, and the power outlets in the cargo bed are no longer available. Quite a few sacrifices for a price that’s far from being a bargain!

With this simplified version, Tesla seems to be trying to make their more expensive models, like the Dual Motor, more attractive in comparison. Nevertheless, this reduction in equipment may disappoint some potential buyers. Competitors such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV or Rivian R1T offer better-equipped alternatives within the same price range.
