Saudi Police Ride in Lucid Air

Saudi Arabia is preparing to launch a fleet of Lucid Air on its roads. Finally, a market for the model?

The Saudi Ministry of Interior released on Sunday a short video on X, showing a shiny police Lucid Air. The video lasts just under a minute and a half, and comes just as the country’s World Defense Show is set to begin this Sunday.

There is no doubt about the vehicle’s purpose with the word “Police” written on the sides, at the back, and on the hood, as well as its two-tone livery reminiscent of American police cars from the 1980s. But we are firmly in the 21st century when a compartment opens, revealing a drone that takes off and ascends into the sky.

A few days ago, a picture of the wrapped car appeared on social media. This is likely the model intended for the upcoming Riyadh auto show, which will be held from February 4 to 8.

The Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia owns about 61% of Lucid’s capital, and the automaker was the first to open a factory in the Middle East last September. The automaker also started delivering the Lucid Air in Saudi Arabia in June, and in 2022, the company announced a fleet deal for 100,000 electric vehicles over ten years.

Last month, a Lucid executive stated that about 800 Air sedans had already been assembled at the Saudi factory. The executive also detailed the vehicle construction process at their AMP-1 plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, before dismantling it and shipping it to Saudi Arabia, where it is… reassembled! This business model still needs to prove itself…
