Return of the Citroën 2CV in 10 Days! No Room for Disappointment

Citroën is preparing to unveil an electric concept inspired by the 2CV at the Paris Motor Show. But reviving such a legend requires more than just a pretty nod to the past.

“It’s 2 back”: Citroën plays with words and, above all, with our memories. Since September 30, the brand has been gradually revealing images of a concept that aims to transpose the spirit of the Deuche into electric mobility. Simplicity, accessibility, personality: the intentions are appealing. Now, we await their translation onto four wheels.

As early as August, we highlighted the conundrum facing Citroën designers. How to immediately evoke the 2CV with its distinct fenders, prominent headlights, and incredible silhouette, while meeting current safety requirements? Too much fidelity could result in a caricature. Too much freedom would erase the very elements that everyone hopes to recognize. Our reservations remain intact.

Citroën must think “Forward”

Nevertheless, we can expect a small electric vehicle that prioritizes useful space, a stripped-down presentation, and ingenious solutions rather than an excess of screens. This would be consistent with the philosophy claimed by Citroën. A canvas roof, rounded shapes, or details reminiscent of the original would be welcome, but these remain expectations, not a confirmed product specification.

Because the true examination will far exceed the design. The original 2CV was practical before becoming a collector’s item. Its descendant must therefore convince with its price, comfort, simplicity, and ease of use. A heavy, sophisticated car sold at a nostalgic price would miss the point altogether.

The Paris concept will allow us to assess the intention; it will not be enough to validate all the promises of the future model. Citroën has a great deal to do to avoid disappointment. We want to rediscover the charm of the Deuche, but above all its purpose: to make automobiles accessible, practical, and endearing. The badge alone will not suffice.
