Renault 4 Plein Sud: Is it worth paying nearly €2,000 more to drive without a roof?

With its canvas roof, the Renault 4 E-Tech Plein Sud promises more fun on board, but is the game really worth the candle?

With the Renault 4 E-Tech Plein Sud, the diamond brand cleverly plays on nostalgic feelings. This convertible version of the new electric SUV clearly draws inspiration from the legendary 1960s Renault 4 Plein Air. Its main selling point? A large electric canvas sunroof measuring 92 cm long by 80 cm wide that transforms the onboard atmosphere as soon as the first rays of sunshine appear.

The problem is that this breath of fresh air comes at a price. In France, the Renault 4 E-Tech Plein Sud starts at €37,290 in the Techno trim and rises to €39,290 in the Iconic version. Compared to equivalent fixed-roof models, the premium reaches about €1,800.

That’s a hefty price for the wild hair

Technically, the Plein Sud offers no mechanical evolution. It retains the 150 hp engine coupled with the 52 kWh battery. Worse, its WLTP range slightly decreases from 409 km to 392 km due to structural modifications to the roof.

So, is this extra cost justified? From a rational perspective, it’s hard to answer affirmatively. For nearly €2,000, the buyer gets neither more performance nor increased range. But the automobile is not always just an accounting equation. Renault is selling an experience here: that of driving with the wind in your hair, enjoying increased brightness, and giving this R4 an extra touch of charm that classic versions cannot claim.

The Renault 4 Plein Sud is therefore aimed less at bargain hunters than at enthusiasts of pleasure and differentiation. It remains to be seen whether a few square centimeters of blue sky are really worth nearly €2,000. For many, the answer will be emotional before it is financial.
