Porsche Taycan: the electric sedan crosses a symbolic milestone

Launched at the end of 2019, the Porsche Taycan, the manufacturer’s first electric car, has surpassed 100,000 units sold, but the successor is coming soon!

In September 2019, Porsche made headlines with its Taycan. A dedicated platform “J1,” giving a very low stance (rare among electric vehicles), the fastest charging on the market (and still today!), and top-tier performance. However, it requires a high price and doesn’t offer enormous range like the Tesla Model S. But customers weren’t scared off, as sales remain strong!

Porsche Taycan: Success Thanks to a Complete Offer?

The Porsche Taycan has thus exceeded 100,000 units produced. It may seem modest in the automotive world, but among 100% electric luxury cars, it’s huge. Recall that the starting price is over 90,000 euros… and approaches 200,000 in the Turbo S version with 761 hp, without options!

To appeal to Stuttgart brand fans, the electric sedan has adopted the recipe of offering numerous models, similar to the 911 or Cayenne: all-wheel drive, GTS, rear-wheel drive, Turbo, etc. Moreover, the Taycan offers a choice between the classic sedan body, the Sport Turismo wagon, and the more rugged Cross Turismo. And let’s not forget the dozens of options and customizations, allowing for almost unique builds worldwide.

A Facelift and More Porsche Electric Models Coming

Could the announcement of this symbolic milestone be a pretext to discuss a new phase? Indeed, scoop hunters have spotted prototypes of the Porsche Taycan, indicating a facelift is upcoming. After 3 years on the market, it’s often a sign of a mid-cycle update. 2023 is therefore expected to be the year of a second phase for the electric sedan, or even a GT version exceeding 1,000 hp according to rumors…

Soon after, other 100% electric Porsche models will support the Taycan. The first of its kind will be the electric Porsche Macan, built on a new PPE platform. It could arrive at the end of 2023 at best, or in 2024. Certainly, 2024 will also see the debut of a model that purists eagerly await, with some concern. Because the Porsche 718 will migrate to electric, whether as a Boxster convertible or a Cayman coupe.

Then, in 2025 or later, the luxury large electric crossover will crown the lineup. It will use Volkswagen Group’s new SSP platform, and surpass in size and price the upcoming electric Cayenne.
