Porsche Confirms a Future Premium Electric SUV

To support the all-electric Macan and the hybrid Cayenne, an unprecedented Porsche SUV will complete the lineup by 2025.

Who would have thought that Porsche would dare to launch an SUV 25 years ago? The Cayenne was created by the Volkswagen Group to compete with the Mercedes ML and the pioneering Range Rover. Today, it is the brand’s best seller. Porsche sold nearly 42,000 units of the Cayenne out of 146,000 in total between January and June 2022.

Additionally, behind it, we find the little brother Macan, born in 2014, with 38,000 units. These two SUVs account for 55% of the volume. The famous 911 just exceeds 20,000 units, closely followed by the electric Taycan, leaving the rest to the Panamera and 718 models.

An Electric Crossover for Porsche’s Prestige

If you still can’t get used to the idea that Porsche makes SUVs and electric vehicles, hold on. During its 2022 annual investor presentation (Capital Markets Day), the brand confirmed a new, unseen model.

This third SUV will sit above the Macan and Cayenne in Porsche’s range. It currently doesn’t have a precise name, aside from its category “Prestige,” but some key details are already known. First, it will be purely 100% electric. It will use the new SSP platform from the Volkswagen Group, arriving in 2026. The manufacturer introduced this SSP platform in 2021, which will be tested by Audi Artemis in 2024 and which Volkswagen Trinity will debut in 2026.

Another insight is the silhouette of this new beast. It won’t have a traditional SUV profile. For that, there will be the upcoming Porsche Macan Electric expected in 2023 or even 2024, and the plug-in hybrid Cayenne. It will have a crossover or tall sedan style. Stuttgart’s firm already gives a first glimpse, to keep us waiting.

Although it may seem absurd, this luxurious electric Porsche will have direct rivals. The Lotus Eletre, the Maybach based on Mercedes EQS SUV, are some examples of this niche. Jaguar is also expected to follow suit.

Finally, this new model will be produced at the Leipzig plant in Germany. When? Early 2025 at the earliest, realistically 2026, given the availability of the SSP platform.

A Complete Electric Range in 2025?

How could Porsche reach its goal of selling 80% of electric and hybrid cars by 2030? Since 2019, the Taycan has shown clearly that electric cars can meet the demands of luxury automobiles. Next year, the Macan will get such a powertrain, at best, through the new PPE platform. This platform is shared with other VW Group brands, such as the Audi Q6 e-tron and Sportback models.

In 2025, the Porsche 718 will also become electric. It foreshadowed this intention through the Mission R concept in 2021 but did not specify if it will be a coupe Cayman or a Boxster convertible. As for the Cayenne, it will also switch to electric. Without explicitly stating it, Porsche has clearly placed it in the PPE platform category for its future. Considering its third generation from 2018, a replacement is expected no earlier than 2025.

Remaining iconic, the 911. Will it opt for synthetic fuels?
