Pirelli at the Service of Electric Cars

Pirelli already has over 500 approvals for its tires dedicated to electrified vehicles since their launch in 2019.

This ELECT range from Pirelli is based on a set of technologies specifically dedicated to the characteristics of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Despite similar appearances, electric vehicles differ from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and require specific tires. Heavier, battery vehicles impose more constraints on the sides of the tires, which need to be reinforced. Additionally, the torque of electric motors is instantaneous, so a compound is needed that is ready to transmit power to the ground immediately.

According to Pirelli, using tires specifically developed for electrified vehicles presents several advantages, starting with benefits for battery range. Due to their low rolling resistance, these tires can offer up to 50 km of additional range, leading to significant savings on charging costs. Moreover, as we explained, these tires have increased grip to manage the high torque of electric motors and reinforced structures to withstand the weight of electric vehicles. Both elements contribute to reducing tire wear by up to 20%. Pirelli has also paid particular attention to the noise disturbances caused by tires, which are much more noticeable in an electric car than in a thermal car. The ELECT tires can reduce perceived noise in the cabin by up to 20%, benefiting overall driving comfort.
