The Opel Zafira Life Electric Transformed into a Camper Van

Does electric powertrains have a place in a motorhome? The question has not yet been settled, but more and more brands are experimenting with it.

After Renault and its Hippie Caviar Motel Kangoo, Opel is also presenting a prototype of an electric camper van: the Zafira-e Life Crosscamp Flex. Showcased for the first time in Düsseldorf during the leisure vehicle trade show, this camper will be marketed starting next year in certain markets.

As its name indicates, this new version is actually a product of Crosscamp, which belongs to the camper manufacturer Erwin Hymer Group.

Building on a formula already used on thermal Zafira Life models, the new e-Life Crosscamp Flex features a pop-up roof, under which two sleeping areas can be set up. It also has a foldable bench seat into a double bed, numerous storage compartments, a kitchenette, a sink, and a gas stove. Water tanks and swiveling front seats are also included in the list of special features.

The interior lighting and other electrical equipment are powered by an additional 95 Ah battery. The main motor is connected to a 75 kWh battery, similar to those found in the more standard versions of the Zafira-e Life. The estimated WLTP combined cycle range is 322 km. Some may find this a bit modest, but it could hardly be otherwise. Improving a battery’s capacity to extend range is a complex operation, typically only a manufacturer can perform.

Its maximum charging power of 100 kW allows for a quick recovery of much of the range. With a fast charger, the battery can be recharged to 80% in 48 minutes.

Crosscamp will also offer a more basic Lite version of the Opel Zafira-e Life. For now, pricing details have not been announced.
