Opel, new electric sports flagship of Stellantis?

Long time discreet on the international modern motorsport scene, Opel could well become the electric sporting spearhead of the Stellantis group.

The announcement of the Opel GSE Formula E Team, made official by Florian Huettl and Jeff Dodds, is part of a clear dynamic: to make competition an accelerator of the electric transition. The arrival of the new generation of GEN4 single-seaters, expected in 2026, reinforces this ambition with significantly improved performance, up to 600 kW and permanent all-wheel drive.

For Opel, this choice is not opportunistic. The brand is capitalizing on a solid heritage, from rallying to DTM, while already having begun its electric shift with the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup, the first 100% electric one-make cup launched in 2021. An experience that now informs a much more ambitious program at the highest global level.

What remains for Peugeot and Citroën?

This positioning could also shuffle the cards within Stellantis. While Peugeot and DS Automobiles have already carried the group’s colors in endurance and Formula E, Opel seems to embody a new phase: that of more accessible electric performance, but just as technological.

The GSE label (Grand Sport Electric) thus becomes the link between the track and the road. Models like the Mokka GSE or the future Corsa GSE illustrate this desire to transpose the sporting image into the production range, with significantly improved performance and a defined identity.
